State and USAID: U.S. assistance in FY 2013 will support Kenya’s critical role in the Horn of Africa. Programs focus on health, education, economic growth, and advancing key political and governance reforms through implementation of the new constitution and fighting corruption and impunity, which is fundamental to Kenya’s future stability and prosperity. Ongoing conflict and instability in neighboring Somalia continues to pose serious security and humanitarian challenges for Kenya and the region. With frequent drought conditions due to climate changes in the last three decades, Kenya is facing economic, health, and environmental challenges that threaten progress made in these sectors. U.S. foreign assistance will be critical for Kenya to establish conditions for long-term stability, improve economic and social opportunities for all Kenyans, and increase the country’s capacity to provide basic services for its people. Presidential initiative funding in agriculture, climate change, and health will also directly address many of these issues. (Source:
